Each year a new cohort from our 'Newton Academy - the science club for girls' completes their three-year programme, and each year we celebrate their graduation by inviting an exceptional scientist to Lincoln to inspire the girls to do great things in the future

Emily Cummins

Young Minds 2018

Emily Cummins inventor of the sustainable fridge which is 'powered' by dirty water but keeps medicines or small food items clean, dry and cool. Emily spent her gap year in Namibia refining her design and decided to give away the design plans in townships across southern Africa because she wanted to enable as many people as possible to build their own fridges. She was named as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Young People in the World 2010, won The Barclays Woman of the Year Award 2009 and Cosmopolitan magazine's Ultimate Save-the-Planet Pioneer 2008.
